How many here are double majors or graduated with a double major?

Do you feel the workload is worthwhile overall or you can gain the same success with the traditional major-minor?

Double majors are worthless.

Also, minors are not exactly traditional... Tons of schools don't offer them.

For law school, having a 2nd major shouldn't provide a benefit but you don't know whether or not she intends to go to law school.

I only did the single major and minor and got out in 3.5 years, but my brother did dual EE and physics degrees while also being premed and graduated in 4 years and felt the work was all well worth it - he has patents in technologies that meld the engineering, medical school training, and physics, and is also an expert witness for patent disputes (which is his highest paying job).

It depends on what you want to do and how much of a self-learner you like to be as to whether you will benefit from the double major or not. Dean Kamen dropped out of college and yet he has made far more money than my brother melding engineering, medical knowledge, and physics into inventions just from his own self-educating. But both Dean and my brother are happy with the routes they took, so it's all good.

I can't recall ever meeting a person with a double major or dual degree who has regretted doing it. While most people with a single degree also don't regret just having one degree, I have heard of some people who feel if they had it to do over again, they would do a double major or dual degree, though I am not sure exactly what their reasons for this were.

Is minoring in a subject just for pure enjoyment/interest a bad thing? Like for example, religious studies, Japanese, theater, etc.

If no one cares about minors, why do people minor?

For the experience? Practical reasons? Personal reasons?

Because they want to fill up resume space? Because they want to tell someone "Hey, I minored in Finance!"? Because they don't know any better? Because they fulfilled the requirements for the minor anyway so they might as well get it?

In other words, lots of reasons.

I double majored in Computer Engineering and Math. A couple of the math classes I took were useful for graduate EE classes, but that's about it. Most people say that grad schools don't care about double majoring or graduating early, but I'm not so sure after hearing about students with higher GPAs, similar research experience, and probably better recs (mine were pretty generic) getting rejected by Stanford while I got in.

Were you the one who posted the stats on others in your program and most not only had two BS degrees, but got them in 2 or 3 years?

I also think that a double major can't hurt and can help, but won't always help, and should be done out of genuine interest for the topics rather than just to beef up a resume.

It really depends on your future plans/goals. I'd recommend doing it only if it doesn't force you to stay an extra year (though I do know people who do that) or interrupt your education in any way.

Many people double major with one major that's more practical and one major that's more fun/less practical. For example, lots of people who love the arts will have one major in the arts (theatre, music, art, etc), but will be afraid of just majoring in that in case it falls through (which it probably will). So, they have a second major that is more likely to result in a career. Double majors are good if you WANT to take a lot of classes in two fields and just love both of them.

I did a double major in English and history and minored in International Relations - but it was ridiculously easy to do at my school. 10 classes required for the English major, 12 for the history.
