Tucker Carlson wants U.S. cities like Baltimore to fail | READER COMMENTARY

Tucker Carlson and his friends and allies have been emboldened
by the Donald Trump years to peddle outright their racist and fascist
nonsense (“Racist narratives about Baltimore do lasting damage,” Feb.
13). They are waging a war on cities, not just Baltimore but all
American cities, because our cities represent the centers in which
opposition to all that Mr. Carlson represents arises and gains strength.
Cities house Black and brown Americans, immigrants, refugees and
activists (and Democrats) who want to make things better for all of us.
In reality, our cities, Baltimore included, have been starved of state
and federal initiatives and funding. We have also been neglected or
vilified by national leaders of both parties. There will be no solutions
or support coming from the feral demagogues like Tucker Carlson: he
traffics in hate, malice and ignorance.
Those who work to improve Baltimore and other cities are fed by
imagination, hope and understanding. We know who wins, long-term, that
battle.

Jon C. McGill, who has served as headmaster since 2001, resigned
from the private all-boys school in Baltimore last week after an annual
evaluation revealed the false claim, according to separate statements
released Friday by McGill and the school's board of trustees.
"It came to light that there were misrepresentations on his
resume and in his early discussions with Gilman having to do with his
intercollegiate athletic participation," Charles C. Fenwick Jr.,
president of the board, wrote in a statement that was posted on the
school's Web site.
"Situations such as this are difficult for all involved,"
Fenwick wrote. "Whereas the school readily acknowledges the
accomplishments of Jon McGill, it also respects and recognizes his
resignation and our need to accept it."

In a separate statement also posted on the school's Web site,
McGill said he was asked to resign and acknowledged the inaccuracy on
his resume.
"I claimed membership on a university hockey team of which I was
not a member," he wrote. "Although I removed that reference from my
resume in September 2004, I have no one else to blame but myself for the
error of putting it there in the first place more than thirty years
ago. I'm sorry for the mistake."
Fenwick declined to say yesterday whether any additional
inaccuracies were discovered on McGill's resume or whether there were
any other circumstances that led to McGill's resignation.
"I am not going to comment on any more than what is in that statement," Fenwick said.
John E. Schmick, a 1967 graduate who serves as assistant
headmaster, will serve as acting headmaster until a search committee can
find McGill's replacement. A 60-member volunteer board of trustees
oversees the school.
In announcing McGill's resignation in his online statement, Fenwick praised McGill.
"He has been a tireless worker for the school, and under his
leadership we have conducted the largest capital campaign in the
school's history," Fenwick wrote. "In short, Gilman has become a better
place because of Jon McGill."
The president's statement is unclear on whether McGill's
resignation was requested. However, McGill said he was shocked when he
was asked to resign.
"As I have heard frequently over the past few months, the school
has never been in better shape," he wrote. "I know, however, that the
responsibility for establishing the vision of the school rests with the
Board and when the Head and the Board are not sharing the same vision,
it is time for the Head to step aside."
McGill did not return calls yesterday seeking comment.
Gilman, located in North Baltimore, has about 1,000 students in
kindergarten through 12th grade. Notable alumni include former Gov.
Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., former state's attorney Stuart O. Simms and U.S.
Rep. John Sarbanes.
McGill became the school's 12th headmaster in July 2001 after a
search committee received more than 80 applications from around the
world. Before coming to Gilman, he was associate headmaster of the
Polytechnic Preparatory Day School in Brooklyn, N.Y.
He has a bachelor's degree with honors in history and English
literature and a master's in history from the University of Waterloo in
Canada. He also has a master's in urban education from the University of
London.
Gilman hired McGill to succeed Archibald R. Montgomery IV, who
announced his resignation in March 2000, a month after a student alleged
in his senior speech that a retired local judge with close ties to the
school had looked at him inappropriately in a locker-room shower after a
tennis match.
Stephen T. Scott, who was then president of the school's trustee
board, told The Sun in an interview at the time that Montgomery's
resignation was not connected to the incident.

Surprised he stuck around Baltimore.
City is a shithole with some very nice areas. The people who
live in the nice parts are clueless how shitty the rest of the city is.
City is dysfunctional because most people are dysfunctional. Democrats
refuse the medicine that is needed, Republicans just don't care and live
in the suburbs. The rich whites in the rich areas inside the city are
all shitlib urban progressives now so it's a Marie Antoinette world for
them. They're going to "save" poor black people by doing nothing except
write articles about how racist it is to help poor black people.
